Keyword Research For Online Business

Every webmaster has one thing in common, and it is that they want top listings in search engines. It’s not very easy to get sales from the search engines if you pick the wrong keywords. Doing keyword research is a very important part of starting an online business. If you do not do keyword research before starting an online business, you will fail.

There are many inexperienced website owners that claim that you should use keywords that are long tail. If you want to rank well and make money, then long tail keywords may actually waste your time. Many keywords that are long tail never get searched at all. In my experience, I have noticed that more and more people are choosing the wrong long tail keywords.

You really need to look for keywords that get searched but aren’t being optimized very well. A long tail keyword can actually ruin your business strategy. The length of a keyword does not indicate how competitive it is. There are actually some five word keywords that have a lot of competition, while some one word keywords never get searched.

I will advise you how to do keyword research the right way. First, I examine hundreds of keywords and pick some that apply to my website. Next, I use a software called Keyword Elite to find out the monthly search volume for each term. I try to stay away from using the Google Keyword Tool because I don’t think it is very accurate with the search volume.

After that, I search the keywords that are getting a decent amount of visitors. I use Yahoo to examine the websites that have the number one position for their inbound links. I look to see if the site is getting backlinks with the keyword in them.

If most of the links do not contain the keyword in them, then I know that the website owner is a rookie. With relevant backlinks and patience, I will easily be able to get the number one spot for that certain keyword.

New website owners get scared of competition and don’t realize that it’s actually not that hard to rank well. You have to take into consideration that many webmasters know nothing about search engine optimization and are lucky to be ranking well. If you find keywords where website owners aren’t doing good optimization, you have a good chance of taking their spot and making money.
